Cuban Oregano
“It’s pretty vigorous and can take abuse, which makes for a great combo.”
I’ve never felt so closely related to a plant.
I am not the best at growing anything green. In fact I’m quite terrible. Most of the time it’s due to lack of attention, as I have iron upon iron in the fire of life.
I was gifted a couple small stems of Cuban oregano in May. “Just stick it in soil and it’ll grow,” she said.
If you knew the family it came from, you’d think everything they touch would bloom, blossom and ripen, so I was a bit skeptical with my shady botanical past. Lo and behold, I stuck that green, hairy stem into a pot of dirt and a couple weeks later that thing had tripled in size.
Where was this magical power when I was trying to grow through adolescence?
In all seriousness, this plant embodies the very attributes I want to have in life. I train my body, mind, and soul to be energetic, full of life, and able to withstand the conditions around me. Water me or don’t, slice off a part of me and watch it grow back, cut me to pieces and let me multiply. Oh, and it’s delicious.

I’m sure there are other plants out there with incredible abilities, but today, if you ask me which I would be, it’s Cuban Oregano.
So to the one who gifted it, thanks for the plant and the lesson it contains.
